A Flash

There comes a phase in life when nothing grabs your attention. Maybe, not once but it keeps coming and going? Reactions to any event is like "Oh! not again!!" Or "Is that all?" is so common. Bring on something new! even before anything has started.

Is it called boredom or overkill? Maybe both. Any news on TV is just another news; not worth debating, tweeting or blogging. A day is just another day - work, home, sleep and morning again. Of course with other mundane activities thrown in. Weekends are predictable. Friends are fair weather; I mean there is no sweat to be wiped. All's fine.

Is life thrilling only in the absence of mundane stuffs? It scares me you know? To think that this is what I would be doing for the next 20-30 years? I really admire our elders and theirs who would have pretty much lived the whole of their life etched in stone. We are blessed; games, movies, friends, social networking, exposure to lot of other things that can entertain us and yet; I am saying I am bored.

Thinking about it; it surely is an overkill and lack of patience isn't it? We want results immediately; success to come knocking on the door the very next day. We need it fast and immediate. What's wrong in that? My parents definitely struggled. They had limited exposure, limited opportunities; and the race was not deadly as we see today. Today; even if I work like a donkey all 364 days a year and show sloppy results on one; they won't think twice before replacing me. Such is the competition. There are lot of rotten tomatoes around; people will quickly pick them up and throw it away!

Personally, you are too soon bored of your boy friend/girl friend/spouse. First few months are bliss, Overkill here as well. And then the interest wanes. What do you talk to each other? "How was your day today?" What do you need for dinner?" The boy got good grades at school".......Then? Man watches TV and the lady doing something else?

Anything in abundance is sure a spoiler. Somethings are too easy to get; too fast and too easily bored with. You need something else, something new each time and that leaves you bored. What's next? What's new? Will there ever be anything satisfying? I guess not. Then one fine day; nothing matters. You consume everything with the same level of interest; or lack of it. You have seen it all, done it all - is what you believe. Momentary happiness, momentary sadness, its all a flash.

I think I am blabbering, these are just so normal isn't it? I am thinking if I should even post this or delete it? :)
Its all a flash :-)

Nothing :) Sometimes 'nothing' leads to something :)

  2. Hmm.What struck me is the backdrop of this all,the very substance of what you have just vaguely painted here. One of the reasons why we are getting too bored.Unlike the bygone generations,we are enjoying or killing time with just 'man-made' ready made entertainments.Which in itself is boring. To contradict with what you wrote there about the older ones, they rather had a better life.Substance wise. They had things that they were to explore.Even for me,who had a splendid childhood in a remote village,it's the most valuable something in my life. You had many things on your own.Like you can roam around, you witness a frigid evening by the riverside,or walk to a village library.Lots of experiences and work for brain.Just put a glance to the reading pattern of this generation.I am not blaming.I most often discourage my little one from seeing the CD's.It's better reading a cindrella than watching it.Spoils your thought pattern.Poor unlucky generation today don't even realise what they miss. It's but not their fault.Just the course called "LIFE".What to do Insi ? Perhaps a soul like you can write few lines on this.Yes,that matters too !

    1. Melange,

I endorse what you say. The next generation after me is still unlucky than I probably was. I still prefer to read than watch. I like to steal a quiet time than indulge in TV or games. But things are so fast; it comes so soon, bores you so soon and then leaves you. Its difficult not to be affected by it you know.

I write about it; I wont be bogged down for sure. Thats something I am thankful about

  3. True to every word..I myself have been pondering over how relationships change over time... how you kind of start getting bored of that one person whom you would initially not spare for even 5 minutes... how cooking a new dish doesn't excite you anymore.. though initially even the thought of making a plain dal fry used to keep you flying.. as things get mundane.. you kinda stop appreciating them.... bad attitude.. but I guess all of us are programmed to do so....

  4. I endorse Melange. The older generation had it better; surely some of them too would have been bored like you, but I am sure many of your generation also do not find life boring. One of the main reasons for this 'boredom' is the inability to enjoy solitude. Not only solitude but 'inactivity'. We seem to think that activity is all about interaction with others or the electronic gadgets around us.

I look at my fellow travellers in the train. Most of them are either toying with their mobiles or listening to music with a glazed expression. Music is not for the sake of enjoying, but as a relief from the monotony of train travelling! If they had only looked outside at the passing scenery! The paddy fields, the verdant green hillocks, the lagoons and lakes, the old crumbling temple, the pretty girl on a bicycle, the birds on the wire - and fellow passengers! Boredom comes when you don't observe, when you don't take yourself off from the centre of your universe! Oh, there is a lot to write on it! B, at least you could write about it; think of the hundreds out there watching TV but not seeing anything! And reading, like Melange said. How many of the young read stuff other than that would propel them in their studies?

    1. Balan,

Yes, my point is its becoming difficult to enjoy the "nothing"ness. You know what I mean? We are so worked out both mentally and physically; doing nothing seems so abnormal. We have forgotten to take time off; to be doing nothing, to enjoy nothing.

The brain in wired and its shrinking; thats sad. It happens to me also; I am affected by it. But I make sure I do something about it. At least I manage to be sane :)

  5. This post surprises me, for the fact that the words come from you.
You are a person who always learn something new or read a new book. Why should boredom or monotony get the best of you?!

On second thought though, I think I recognize this kind of monotony. When I was back in my hometown, there was a time when it felt like all possibilities of exploration or new experiences have been exhausted. I wanted badly to break into new boundaries. This is despite the fact that there was enough things to explore 'online' just by sitting at home.

In the end, it all comes down to our perception of things. In his book 'Istanbul: memoirs of a city', Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk says how he's spent majority of his life entirely within his home city. His deep bonding and vivid exploration of the city gives us a glimpse of how the older generation would've managed to stay in a less connected world with limited exposure; essentially without as much boredom as we're experiencing now :)

    1. Rahul,

:) I bet! Its so unlike me isnt it? The thing is, the bulk of books I showed you...I read them all :P I did photowalks too. Now I need to pick up something else. I cant stay idle.

I am hyperactive and things easily bores me. I need to churn out new things faster than I get bored out of them :)
True, "junk is as much space you have" right? They didnt have means, they managed to keep themselves happy. We have means, we have outgrown now

  7. I just have to nod my head for every word which is said here!!

Boredom - the word falls into the category of hyperactive series!

  8. I agree, we want more, demand more and easily bored with things. My news watching has really gone down. I really have no stomach left for inane debates and sensational news anymore. Are our expectations normal?

Well,we generally tend to take things for granted n casual, instead being satisfied n thankful;which i think leads to boredom n 'nothing'ness.....:)

  11. Hi,
    After so long!
Surprisingly,I had written something similar just now.
We all get bored with life at some stage or other.Even with the closest ones, after sometime,I had wished if I were left alone. That is life.Nothing is permanent. The only reality is the present moment. What we do with it..well..we all had choices!

    1. Doc,

You put it bang on. Its the way it is right? Only thing is the frequency at which we get bored :) Thanks

  12. I think the post is a reflection of the times we live in. People are no longer committed to each other unlike earlier. Of course, there is nothing permanent and life continues to remind us at every point that change is the only true certainty of life.

    1. Akshay,

Yup, there are various kinds. There are committed and honest people even now; they may not be bored with personal life; but bored with something else! Its all part of life
