Yieeeppppiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeee!!!!

Holiday time!! I have 10 days of holidays, no work. Absolutely no work!!! Relieved that I would have some breather from work, but no plans of vacation yet. Something spontaneous maybe.

The year has been "lucky" as our Honorable Home Minister P Chidambaram mentioned. Why? No bombings people!!!

I saw Nanos on roads. They are so cute and adorable. Overdose of Saifeena on TV. It was also abysmally entertaining to see Rakhi Sawant's swayamvar. An Indian origin scientist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan got Nobel Prize and as usual we all shamelessly started owning to him, only that unlike Sunita Williams, he came back strongly. Mr Obama made speeches everywhere and got himself the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yeah!! many more such interesting events was witnessed in 2009.

Personally it has been a good year for me. Perfect blend of joys, sorrows, excitement, depression and all. My blog had to handle sudden rush of people this year. I have been blogging for more than 1.5 years now and its recently that these surge. Feels good. Got more readers, more thoughtful comments and more views to debate about. More awards :-) which was encouraging and made me write better.

I would like to thank all the folks who put up with me and go through the ordeal of reading my self proclaimed sarcasms and information and strain your eyes looking at my pictures.

I want to specially mention about bloggers who have been encouraging and thus have kept me alive and kicking. Its tough to find such sweetness among fellow people isn't it. I really appreciate all you people who read completely and throw in relevant comments and don't do it for the sake of commenting. Passing comments without reading the post and not understanding what the writer is trying to say but just for the sake of getting comments on their blogs is a big NO-NO.

Its OK if you don't pass comments, I like your posts and if I have something to add, I will definitely comment on your blog. But don't resort to this absurd act of throwing irrelevant comments; not only here but anywhere...

Now, I want to pass on these awards to few people whom I appreciate and cherish their presence in my blog.
These people are those whose posts I wait for. :-)

Punctual?

Well, are you guilty? Yes you are!!! I see it, I see it :-P

Haven't each of us sheepishly given awkward excuses for being late? Running into the meeting room and awkwardly searching for an empty seat to accommodate yourself and coyly apologizing when there are about 12 pairs of eyes staring at you and sizing you up? Swearing at the teacher for being made to run 3 rounds around the school ground for arriving late for the assembly session? Blaming your sandals for showing up late when your boy friend has been waiting for what seemed like ages?

I always had an excuse while at school. "Ma'am bus was late". :-S Only to be retorted back with a sharp "You are supposed to take an early bus"

Or the rather stupid "Uh..I don't know. I was sleeping when my alarm went off"

Being punctual is paramount elsewhere; but here. A person who is late is treated with such disgusted frowns that he would want to hang himself upside down!!! Is it that you had more important and critical work and we are all fools sitting here with all the time of the world? - is the common thought.

But what if nature calls?? Hmmm...... in a fix huh? One of my friend just gave this excuse for being late to the lab session. The lecturer was red-faced.

Talking about punctuality, why do most of us lack it? Isn't it a quality as important as standing first academically in school? But when things as studies are taken so seriously, why not punctuality? We did frown when we were reprimanded for being late to school; didn't we? Did we learn to be on time after that? No!! We repeated being late. Being late for school, for morning basics, for meeting friends......

That's because the importance of this quality was not imbibed. Did we ever think that being on time is respecting other's time? Owning responsibility? No...rather we give lame excuses as if we had better and more important chore than the others.

There are few others who are super punctual; so punctual that they feel uncomfortable on arriving early. These people don't like to keep things pending; always up to date to finish tasks. It is a good trait but is it a sign of anxiousness? Maybe it is few times; when trying to not keep anything pending for fear of lags.

And yeah, not to forget. It does land us in awkward situations sometimes. Arriving early to a birthday party? Errr.....isn't it as if the person has come to grab a few extra drinks?

I have had experiences of arriving on dot to marriage reception. But that would be when the bride and groom are getting dressed!! By the time they are ready; my clothes are ruffled, my hairs frizzy and my patience gone to hell.

There's a very famous quote on punctuality by Franklin P Hones

“The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it.”

How true!!!

The Temples of Belur and Halebid

If there is one place that will surely take your breath away; I bet these temples would be the top of list. The temples of Belur and Halebid are architectural marvel; oh these words don't justify. I don't think any words could actually justify the splendor. When you see them, all you could do is be dumb-struck, mesmerized and wonder where were you all these days without seeing them.

I studied them in my school history lessons, but never had the chance to visit until now. And yeah!! loved every moment of it. These temples are rich and grand repositories of Hindu culture and also Jain culture( the king Vishnuvardhana who initiated the constructions converted from Jainism to Hinduism) . You see people all over the world coming to take in these wonders, their rich intricacies and distinctive architectural style. Few of them staying over to know more about them.

The temples of Belur and Halebid were built by the Hoysala dynasty; who ruled the present day Karnataka from the 11th to 14th century. These temples were built then and still astonish people who visit for their sheer hard work with the detailed sculptural work. The temples are not huge; but it is compensated by extremely skilled craftsmanship. INTRICACY is the word there. The artists carved thousands of intricate and delicate figures out of soapstone. The facade of the temple are covered with ornately carved sculptures with no portion left blank. They have carved out Hindu deities, men at battle field, men hunting, birds, animals, ornate pillars, dancers, and yes!! erotic sculptures; if you pay enough attention to the finer details. I was pleasantly surprised to see how broad minded people during those times were after seeing those erotic sculptures.

These temples seemed to have taken 110-150 years to complete and is built with chloritic schist and is a type of soapstone.

Here is a trivia as to how Hoysala dynasty got its name. The words "Hoy Sala" meaning "Strike Sala" were called out to Sala, the legendary founder of the dynasty when he was involved in a combat with a tiger. He single-handed killed the beast immortalizing himself and the tiger. The tiger is the royal symbol of the Hoysala dynasty.

The Channakeshava temple complex in Belur is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It was built by King Vishnuvardhana to commemorate the victory over Cholas at Talakad around 1117 AD. It took about 103 years to complete.

These Jain motifs were found at inconspicuous places; like this one here. This was carved at the base of the walk path. Seemed Jainism was no more important. Is it because Jainism was no more the religion of Vishnuvardhana as he converted to Hindusim? Maybe...But these are my observations. :-) Though there were prominent Jain sculptures at Halebid.

Ladies and Gentlemen, HONEST SCRAP award; hmmm...why is it a SCRAP; I fail to understand. But HONEST....hmm....HONEST!!!! what honest?? Me?

But this award is a bit hatke than others; for it seems to challenge the receiver to be nakedly honest; yeah people!!, butt nakedly honest :-P So I am glad that my blog posts have given an impression that I could be honest. Well, tell me try....whats not possible, ain't it?

10 honest things about me....Oh god!!! Isn't this the ultimate test at the pearly gates of heaven :-S. I could see Angel Gabriel in milky white and those fluffy feathers; waiting for my 10 points.

1. I am a person of extremes. Now detailing about it might end up as a post!!

2. I honestly feel people are more poisonous than animals, birds, insects, reptiles......So I am scared of people than anything or any other being.

3. I am a maniac in reading. Give me a book or a bit of paper with some words on them; and you can make sure you could loot my house while I remain oblivious.

Back to School Again!!!

In his comments, Karthik seemed that he wanted more of school. So I satisfied his thirst by adding a paragraph in the same post; yet he wanted more!!!

See that's what I said in my "I want more" post...Yeh Dil Maange More!!! More means abundance not the peacock!!

Awww, pathetic joke that was. To make Karthik jump with joy like a school kid; here's more.

One can talk and talk about school life isn't it? Those days were so much fun; pure fun with innocence. How many of us have not played group games which had no logic at all of any sorts. Each one trying to impose a character; not human characters but as animals, birds, trees and run like an horse galloping; flying with an imaginary wings! Did we ever see around who was watching us? Or if anyone was making fun of us? Did we bother to check if the game is logical?

How about the times when we unleashed our wild imaginations......the mountains, the river, the birds, the trees in all unimaginable colors; blue rose, pink mountains, yellow river...did we ever pause to think about any color sense? The drawings were still beautiful isn't it? And how we felt sad when the teacher gave us B grade instead of an A+. Aww, why did the teacher not find my drawing amazing?

And the times when the lunch boxes were grabbed and each one was interested to know what others had packed than their own. The thirst to be admired by a teacher; each one would bring a rose to his or her favorite teacher on Teacher's Day and wait the full day; being bashful to approach the teacher as if it was a boy proposing to a girl!!! And many times; that rose were taken back home without reaching the teacher.

The days of excursion, seeing places with all the excitment; sharing eatables; singing songs. But yet feeling sad that you had to wear uniforms to excursion. The utmost care taken by teachers to see that all the students returned home safe. The movie experience; when kids are taken for a movie each year. It was Home Alone, Baby's Day Out and such. Walking to a movie hall in a orderly manner.....

And the frowning and making faces by few kids who didn't consume meat when someone mentioned meat. Their parents taught them that hearing the word itself was a taboo isn't it? And how the teacher scolded them for acting indifferent. Those moments when the exam papers were distributed and each one literally rubbed their sweaty palms in anxiety. Who could ever forget those moments when one had to gather all the courage to approach the teacher to be excused so that they could run to the restroom - and the weird gestures made to the teacher and the teacher was supposed to understand :-)

Some sort of admiration for the School Pupil Leader and the House Leaders; everyone tends to look up to them as if they are god and their words are final. Those everyday checks for hygiene and neatness after assembly; polished shoes, trimmed nails, neatly pressed uniforms, neatly combed hair......The popping up eyes and the gaze with queerness when the computer was seen was the first time...those isolated rooms..those BASIC programs on the black screen which seemed the most complicated piece of instructions like rocket science!!

Who would care to forget the birthday celebrated at school. Dressed in the best of dress; the day when the birthday kid was free to not wear uniform to school; each kid waited for the teacher to initiate the birthday wish procedure so that they could get chocolates!!! The birthday kid proudly standing with the teacher; while everyone sang and each kid hardly shook hand; while their eyes and hands were on the chocolates....And if it came on a Sunday; the sad feeling that one could not celebrate the birthday at school.

As one grew, things changed a bit. Girls more bashful; boys more aggressive. I studied in an all girls convent. Anyone who has studied in a strict convent will relate to what I am going to say.

These things happen during your teens especially. The interest towards boys are more because there are no boys studying with you. So the sports practice and outdoor practice is a secretly happy times for the girls and they tend to get admired from passer by guys who would literally stop their vehicle to stand across the school gate to see the girls in action. Aww...lets accept, the girls loved all the attention.

The biology classes when the teacher was supposed to teach about reproduction would be the most amusing one. I still recall my teacher began thus "This is an important topic. I don't want you girls to be giggling and acting funny!!" The times when doctors and Mother superior were called in to get our facts right on sex education. They bound religion and science so that we could understand things better and be cautious. The agony aunt sessions later when girls seemed to have fallen in love only to be guided by teachers to get out of it as they told it were mere infatuation and it was too early in their lives!! The gossips that followed later......Those educative videos and the books thereafter. It seemed funny then; but how it helped shape each of the lives.

There was this one amusing incident that happened each year at my school. We got 3 pairs of uniforms each year; tailored by the school tailor. We had knee length skirts; typical convent style. Few bold girls used to cut one fold shorter so that the skirts are shorter.....And the reprimanding later.....How one wished to get out of these shackles and talk about going to college and then wearing their choice of clothes, trousers, skirts.....et all.

Finally, out of school to college when it seems so exciting to be free without uniforms and bunk classes according to whims and fancies. Only to realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Back to School

Nowadays I am hooked to Farmville and Happy Aquarium on Facebook. I was very very firm not to indulge in them and decided against not letting my mind into these games. But I got hooked!!

Its actually therapeutic to be harvesting bounties of fruits and vegetables and feeding the fishes after a stressful day. And I want to do farming now; virtual farming is all fun and no toil...yet its good.

What I actually want to talk about is not farming; but few of the excitements and joys that I miss nowadays.


Every year; going back to school was an excitement as well as sorrow. Sorrow that those long vacations are finally ending; and its good bye time to cousins. Sad that there would be no more extra sleep time and siestas but to wake up early everyday to the shrill noise of the alarm. Nervous and scared because of all the new things; new teachers, new syllabus... Excitement because of one grade higher in school; nice ranks, new class teacher, new class rooms and that; most time is one floor higher in the school building. Euphoric to go back-to-school shopping to buy new uniforms, new books, shoes, bags, crayons, color pencils, sketch pens, ribbons for the braid.......

Returning back disappointed when dad does not buy those attractive and colorful notebook labels which had animations and flowers on them; instead make did with the paper ones with absolutely no designs but just the shoe brand name; after all these labels were complimentary with those not so attractive shoes. The other pair of shoes was much more attractive and feminine!!

Happy going to school to flaunt new uniforms, new shoes and bags, neatly bound notebooks; brand new pencil boxes and pencils and erasers and sharpeners. Crying and skipping dinner when sketch pens were not bought; instead just a box of crayons or color pencils.

Jealous of seeing a better attractive bag of your class mate with cartoon characters. Momma didn't buy that bag how much ever I pleaded thought. Feeling sad that you did not possess the pencil which had erasers with them.

I always wanted to have Camilin which were attractive with pink flowers but ended up getting Nataraj pencils all the time; which had those boring red and black vertical stripes :-( I wanted Nataraj Plasto erasers but ended up with a cheaper one which would leave a black mark on the book when erased. I always wanted water proof thick brown sheets to bind the book; but it was always paper ones which wouldn't not stay for more than a month.

The excitement to study further complicated things; the excitement to write with a fountain pen; the pride that I have come a long way to be using a fountain pen and then getting promoted to ball point pen. The secret wish to become a class monitor; and when it happens the joy in bossing over others was pure exhilaration. Waiting to figure out newly joined kids and bully them if a chance comes the way.


The attention from teachers when scored nice marks, the pride when you are noticed and called out by name in a group. Pleasure when your teacher sets you as an example to others; when we are all so young enough to not even understand what an idle student is.

The silly fights due to jealousy, stamping on a neatly polished shoe, untying a neatly braided plait, wiping off the sweaty hand on a stark white shirt; propelling ink on your neighbor's book because he didn't give that extra notebook label he had; and behaving as if it was accidental.

The inter-house competitions which was taken up and was "fought" with tooth and nail. Those jumping with joys with pride when won; making fun of the losing team and those crying like the whole world is doomed when lost. Those long waits for the chief guest to arrive during sports and cultural fest; few poor kids fainting by the time the guest arrived. The punishments when PT was skipped; when missed the morning assembly. And those one day excursions; waking up at dawn; going to school on time only to find that the bus has not arrived; wait for hours but still not giving up the excitement. The drawing and craft classes when the imagination ran wild; when the dog could have wings and apples can be blue!!

As the year progresses; the brand new books lose their shine, the pages are torn, the erasers lost, the pencils broken, the shoes torn and the uniforms dirty......only...........

To wait for the next year :-)

I want more!!

"And mommy will allot 25% more pocket money!" excitedly shouts a kid on radio as part of an advertisement of a toiletry which is offering 25% more.

Aren't we all drawn towards excess? MORE, LARGE, EXTRA, BONUS all these are manna. Fatter pay check, a bigger car, a luxurious home....

"Hmm, I thought I would be paid more. Would I be entitled for joining bonus?" are the questions put forth by the candidate; completely forgetting how average his interview performance was.

Look at the simple things around you; a regular coffee is mixed with a dash of orange essence and its now an exotic orange coffee; a dollop of ice cream, some chocolate sauce and you get that enticing cold coffee full blast with coffee beans as garnish. Your humble pizza has the exotic toppings of your choice; the more humbler dosa comes with fancier toppings; from meat to sea food. A katee roll has all sorts of bizarre filling and top on; extra cheese, choice of sauce.

Not just food; just roam around the malls that have cropped up in your cities; the sleazy brands, the variety of choices. Its all at your disposal. The cities are getting bigger, the buildings higher; whether you can afford them or not is secondary. Townships are a city in itself; just having everything about - hospitals, schools, malls, parks. Your humble work space which just had a wooden chair and a table now has food court, gym, creche, play arena, libraries. Airports are like townships offering from bars and lounges to shopping centers.

Watch a movie; they show marriages in London and vacation in the Bahamas. The more the merrier; the bigger the better. Cell phones have music players and camera in them; they come with multiple sim facility, ipods have wi-fi and bluetooth facility. They offer so many features that it will take your lifetime to learn using them. A book store does not offer only books; a music store doesn't sell only music, a fruit shop doesn't sell just fruits.....

Its the era of excess and who but the Americans know it better. Their lavish and extravagant lifestyle; its a nation that lives luxurious and flaunts flamboyancy; which consumes more than any other country. Just imagine if there was one more America!! We are doomed.

One could say its the choice. Choice everywhere. The kids in today's household decide which brand of soap to buy; which plasma TV gives a better clarity and what color of car to buy. Are we spoilt for choices; with choices? Yes. But does it offer a BETTER option or makes things more complicated for us?

Isn't that we have made our most basic needs complex? I get reminded of an advertisement of a large choice of life insurance policy to choose from. Kids run towards a Gola cart and they choose from the range of flavor available; while one kid keeps wondering what to choose from. And then they offer assistance to choose what suits you best. We have so many choices that we need assistance ship to choose. How funny!!

Our expectations rise; we push ourselves to meet those expectations; killing ourselves. Probably the only thing that says less is more is Kareena's size zero!!!
